A personal and powerful essay on loss from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the bestselling author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun.
'Grief is a cruel kind of education. You learn how ungentle mourning can be, how full of anger. You learn how glib condolences can feel. You learn how much grief is about language, the failure of language and the grasping for language'
On 10 June 2020, the scholar James Nwoye Adichie died suddenly in Nigeria.
In this tender and powerful essay, expanded from the original New Yorker text, his daughter, a self-confessed daddy's girl, remembers her beloved father. Notes on Grief is at once a tribute to a long life of grace and wisdom, the story of a daughter's fierce love for a parent, and a revealing examination of the layers of loss and the nature of grief.

Beautiful! As clever, honest and raw as Adichie always is.

I’m kind off at a loss of words with this one. One of the most intimate, emotional books I’ve ever read. I shed a few tears while reading this, I felt so seen and heard. This book is about a daughter grieving the sudden death of her father. It hits close to home for me. I myself lost my father 9 years ago when I was only 11 years old, so safe to say I know exactly what it’s like. Adjusting to a life without him, seeing people I love deeply pained. Losing my father is the most painful thing i’ve ever felt, but witnessing my siblings losing their father too, was equally as painful. If I learned anything from that part of my life it is that no one understands and shares your pain as much as siblings. I realized my siblings were the most important people I had by my side during that time. They were the only ones going through the exact same thing i was, the only ones with the same childhood and the same parents. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done without them. Unforgettable book
