Surprisingly simple and understated book . Portrait of the life of two kids iabandoned by their mother with their home " the Dutch house " as the central character . Dutch house is quite like Mandeely of "Rebecca "- enchanting , haunting and taking over the lives of people who live in it . The mother who abandoned her children came back and continued to live with her pathological desire to serve the needy . She evokes same feeling of disgust in readers as she did in her son . But there is no answer to the question Mave raised - many fathers have abandoned their children to conquer the world - why is it that it's so bad When the mother does it ? It's an easy read . Setting is uncluttered , characters very simple and relatable and there are no hero's or villains . A very human story of a brother , sister and their home .

This was such a beautiful book about the worth of things. Misconceptions about the people closest to us The bonds between family members and letting go. Beautiful writing and stellar narration by Tom Hanks!

The Dutch House is written in the first person, from Danny's adult point of view. Because Danny is by design a clueless, tight-lipped character, it isn't clear that this was the right choice; an omniscient third person narration might have been a better way to get deeper inside him. Many of the details about his eccentric upbringing come courtesy of his older sister, a much more interesting characterPatchett's concern here, as in much of her fiction, is with the often unconventional families we cobble together with what's available to us. Being Patchett, she brings her novel around to themes of gratitude, compassion and forgiveness. The Dutch House goes unabashedly sentimental, but chances are, you won't want to put down this engrossing, warmhearted book even after you've read the last page. The Dutch House” is the story of a “modern family”, as this was the era when families started to become fractured and step-parents and step-siblings became more prevalent.

Beautiful and spectacular story, but also filled with intense sadness. They could not have picked a better reader than Tom Hanks, his voice draws every character up to their full height.
