The book that the most important movie of the 20th century was based on, marvellously read by Sir Ben Kingsley. It was remarkable to hear that most of the events specific to the film did actually take place in real life; the movie follows the book quite closely. However, points taken off for only the abriged version being available. Such an important book should be accessible in its entiterety. Moreover, Thomas Kenneally also writes with the indignation that comes naturally to anyone exposed to the atrocities, but his fury at times tends to stand in the way of the horrors themselves. In that sense, the movie becomes much more powerful as it allows the ghastliness to speak for itself. It’s sad, because I’d have wanted to give the book full marks, but the style of writing and the deletion of portions of it keeps those last two stars away. Having said that: Read it. Listen to it. Be reminded. May things like these never happen again.
