ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK

The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri follows the lives of two brothers, Subhash and Udayan, growing up in Calcutta. While the cautious Subhash eventually leaves for America to pursue his studies, the charismatic Udayan becomes deeply involved in the radical Naxalite movement. Political unrest and idealism drastically alter the course of Udayan's life and his relationships, including his marriage to Gauri. Following a tragic event, Subhash returns and makes a fateful decision that binds him and Gauri together, leading them to a new life in America. The novel explores the enduring impact of choices, the complexities of family ties, and the search for belonging across continents.
