Paleoclimatology is the study of past climates, offering insights into how Earth's climate system has changed over millions of years. Unlike modern meteorology, which focuses on short-term weather patterns, paleoclimatology reconstructs long-term climate trends using indirect evidence from natural records.

One of the fundamental reasons for studying past climates is to identify natural climate variability and distinguish it from human-induced changes. The Earth's climate has undergone significant shifts, from ice ages to warm interglacial periods, often driven by factors such as variations in solar radiation, volcanic activity, and changes in ocean currents. Understanding these past fluctuations helps scientists assess current climate trends in a broader historical context.

Reconstructing ancient climates relies on multiple sources of evidence, known as climate proxies. These proxies include ice cores, tree rings, sediment deposits, and fossilized remains, each providing valuable data about past temperatures, atmospheric composition, and precipitation patterns. Ice cores, for example, contain trapped air bubbles that reveal historical levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Tree rings can indicate annual climate variations, with thicker rings often signifying favorable growing conditions and thinner rings reflecting harsher climates. Sediment layers from oceans and lakes provide further clues about past environmental conditions, preserving pollen, microorganisms, and mineral compositions that reflect climate changes over thousands or even millions of years.
