स्वातंत्र्योत्तर मराठी पत्रकारितेत अव्वल स्थानावर ज्यांचे नाव घेतले जाते त्या गोविंदराव तळवलकर यांनी, तब्बल 27 वर्षे महाराष्ट्र टाइम्स या दैनिकाचे संपादक म्हणून काम केले. त्यांच्या कारकिर्दीची अनेक मोठी वैशिष्टे आहेत, त्यातील एक म्हणजे त्यांनी इंग्रजी विचारविश्व मराठीत सुबोध पद्धतीने आणण्याचे काम सातत्याने केले. राजकारण, समाजकारण आणि साहित्य या तिन्ही क्षेत्रांतील गंभीर वैचारिक ग्रंथ व ग्रंथकर्ते हा त्यांच्या विशेष जिव्हाळ्याचा विषय होता. त्यांनी "वाचता वाचता" हे सदर 1974 ते 78 या पाच वर्षांच्या काळात महाराष्ट्र टाइम्स मधून "वाचस्पती" या टोपणनावाने लिहिले. त्यातील निवडक लेखांचा संग्रह 1979 मध्ये प्रेस्टीज प्रकाशनाकडून आला आणि त्याची नवी आवृत्ती 2018 मध्ये साधना प्रकाशनाकडून आली. विशेष हे आहे की, चार दशकांनंतरही हे लेख शिळे वाटत नाहीत, आणि अशा विषयांवर इतके सातत्याने व इतके रोचक लिखाण नंतरच्या काळातही मराठीत फारसे कोणी केलेले नाही. Govindrao Talwalkar was a popular name in post-independence Marathi Journalism. He has been the editor of the Maharashtra Times for over 27 years. Talwalkar has many feathers in his hat. One among them was the constant approach of bringing the English worldview into the Marathi language. He was particularly interested in serious and thought provoking texts and renowned authors from three fields, i.e. Political, Social and Cultural. During the five years from 1974 to 1978, he wrote 'Wachata Wachata' under the pseudonym 'Wachaspati' published by Maharashtra Times. Prestige Publishing House published the collection of selected articles in 1979. In 2018, Sadhana Prakashan published a new edition. The speciality of these articles is the relevance, relatability, and freshness in them. It still appeals to people despite being four decades old.
