ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK

“The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen follows a communist double agent who witnesses the fall of Saigon and escapes to the United States. As he navigates life in exile, he is torn between his loyalty to his comrades and the realities of his life in America. The novel explores themes of identity, loyalty, betrayal, and the complexities of the immigrant experience. Through the narrator’s role as a spy within the Vietnamese exile community and his involvement in a Hollywood war film, the book critiques American culture’s portrayal of Vietnam while examining the psychological toll of living a double life.
