Book Preview:

#1 You should aim to write an exploratory draft. This means writing whatever gets you through, whatever puts a beginning, middle, and end down on paper. You should let your imagination roam free and ignore any individual writing day’s whims.

#2 The most important thing is not to let any of your outline, scene list, or index cards constrain you too early in the writing process. The pages you’re writing on begin to play back, and a draft comes to life.

#3 You should set writing goals, but you should also occasionally hide from the pressure you’re feeling over the novel’s outcome. You can do this by occasionally taking a break from writing, or by setting smaller writing goals.

#4 If you’re stuck, pretend that what you’re writing doesn’t matter and that it’s for you alone. It’s not that important. As long as you keep writing, you’ll make it.
