#1 The Bulgarian government had signed an agreement with the Germans to deport all Jews from the country. The warehouse was needed as a concentration location for the Jews before their departure.

#2 The Jews had lived in Bulgaria for many centuries, unperturbed by the local population. They were well-integrated in the Bulgarian society, and had not been subject to persecutions or expulsions.

#3 The Jews in Bulgaria were not affected by the anti-Jewish laws and decrees adopted by the Bulgarian government in 1355. In 1492, the Ottoman Empire opened its gates to them, hoping to benefit from their knowledge and expertise.

#4 After the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878, the rights of the Jews were guaranteed in the country’s national Constitution. But anti-Semitic incidents continued, and Jews were not allowed into politics.
