Shree Raman, or Maash as he is known, leads a quiet life in his village in Kerala where nothing ever happens. Until one December dawn, when the ducks and the little duck girl, not so little any more, return to the village after several years of absence and light up Maash's life again.
The year is 2019, the Indian Parliament has passed the Citizenship Amendment Act and the question of identity-- especially religious identity--is at the forefront of everything. Suddenly, everyone wants to know: who is this duck girl, where does she come from, who does she pray to? In a matter of days, Maash finds himself in the middle of a conflict he couldn't have foreseen.
Set in Kaikurussi - the near idyllic village which Anita Nair introduced to readers worldwide in her first novel The Better Man, The Little Duck Girl is a state-of-the-nation story that sensitively but unflinchingly explores the idea of who we are as a people.

“ what I want to worship or who I want to marry should be my choice” - Aasha/ Ayesha. This is the beautiful ending I have heard in 2020. Anita Nair started off with a beautiful description of the aesthetics of a tiny village in Kerala and the lifestyle of people and the the curiosity of a young girl who is struggling within herself to find a sense of belonging. Though I thought the ending might get cliched as the girl seemed to agree to her Maashe’s plan of getting married to him ( an 18 year young girl to a 64 year old man) & changing her religion only to have an identity in the society; but the end where she chose to go and find her tribe of people and fight for her rights leaving behind all the luxuries offered to her really is heart-touching and inspiring. Prakash Raj has always been my favourite character for a villain, a father or a hero on the screen . His voice for this story added more exquisiteness to the story.

My 1st audio book. For whole of the story I had a virtual trip to Kerala's Village. Prakash Raj narration gives life to the story and makes you to forget that you were listening the story.

Such a soulful story... Loved it. Classic Anita Nair... breathing in life to characters and making them so life like, within few pages. The story is short, yet so profound n engaging that one can get lost in the village setting in Kerala n the ruffle a political decision can bring in to simple lives in a sleepy village.
