The two newest Galactic Rangers - Deckland "Rook" Prescott and Braxxon Berenger - are assigned the case. Rook is fresh out of the academy and does things strictly by the book. Berenger is a rough-and-tumble frontiersman who does things his own way. The two men don't like each other, and they certainly don't get along. But they agree to try to work together to investigate the death of this mysterious child.

As their investigation deepens, they discover that this case is about more than just the death of a child. The two Rangers stumble upon a conspiracy which could shake the core of the galactic empire they serve, and solving this murder could cost them their own lives.
