चेरराज्यस्य राजा ईश्वरभक्तः कुलशेखरः प्रतिदिनं हरिकथां श्रावयितुं कमपि पण्डितं स्वकीयप्रासादम् अनाययति स्म । एतत् अनिच्छन्तः राज्ञ्यः अमात्यः च मिलित्वा श्रीरामविग्रहस्थं हारं पण्डितस्य स्यूते स्थापयन्ति । कालसर्पदंशः एव दण्डः इति घोषयित्वा कालसर्पयुक्ते घटे यदा पण्डितः हस्तं निक्षेप्तुम् उद्युतः तावता राजा स्वयं हस्तं प्रवेशितवान् । विस्मयः‌ नाम राज्ञः करस्पर्शनेन सर्पः‌ स्वयं बहिः आगतवान् । न तु दष्टवान् । सः राजा अनन्तरकाले 'भक्तः कुलशेखरः' इति ख्यातः जातः । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”) Kulashekhara, the king of the Chera kingdom, a devotee of God and a noble person, would invite a scholar to his palace every day to listen to stories about the Lord. However, some of the king's ministers and queens, not wanting this, secretly placed Lord Shrirama’s idol's necklace in the scholar’s bag. They announced that the punishment for the scholar was to place his hand in a pot that contained a serpent. Just as the scholar tried to place his hand inside, the king himself placed his hand in the pot first. To everyone’s amazement, the serpent came out of the pot without biting the king. Later, the king became famous as Bhakta Kulashekhara.
