Halloween is drawing near and the autumn darkness is sweeping in over the small west coast town of Västernäs, where Eira Lindberg runs her bookshop. Eira belongs to the town's supernatural residents, who have lived openly among humans for some time now. Eira is a shapeshifter – an oddling, as the locals call them – but she grew up among humans and would rather just tend her cozy shop and enjoy a good cup of coffee in peace.

But the peace is shattered when someone suddenly hangs a bag containing a severed head on the bookshop's door one dark evening. The head turns out to belong to a recently transformed fairy, and the murder fans the already fierce tensions between humans and supernatural beings. The anti-oddling party, the Human Democrats, senses an opportunity, and both elves and werewolves are gearing up to protect themselves. But why did the murderer hang the head on Eira's door of all places?

The gruesome murder becomes the start of a deadly game of cat and mouse, forcing Eira to confront herself and her unknown family background. Because how is it, really, that she's the only werelynx in Västernäs...?
