Book Preview:

#1 I had heard rumors about what happened to Lauren. I never even knew her that well, but we had sort of hung out a few times in high school. She had moved to San Francisco when I was a senior and we met somehow. I was sleeping with her for about two weeks.

#2 I had been sober for exactly eighteen months when I met with my sponsor, Lauren Sheff, who I had known from rehab. I was surprised by my own actions. I had stopped going to meetings, and my mind would talk to me about how much better I was than everyone else.

#3 I was with Zelda, a woman I thought I was madly in love with, until she got pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. I was crushed. I couldn’t handle it. I relapsed and drove up the 5, drinking from a bottle of Jäger.

#4 I spent the last four years chasing that first high. I wanted desperately to feel that wholeness again. I was like, This time, it will be different. But I couldn’t just stop. I was being held captive by an insatiable monster that wouldn’t let me stop.
