1971 च्या 3 डिसेंबरला भारत-पाक युद्धाला सुरुवात झाली. युद्धकाळात सर्वसामान्य माणसांना नीट भेटता येत नाही. म्हणून युद्ध संपल्यावर 25 डिसेंबरपासून 11 जानेवारीपर्यंत बांगला देशात आम्ही अनेक ठिकाणी फिरलो; अनेकांच्या गाठीभेटी घेतल्या. जे ऐकले व जे पाहिले त्यातून तेथे झालेल्या कत्तलींची व अत्याचारांची भीषणता उमगली. भारतीय जवानांचा पराक्रम,मुक्तिवाहिनीतील सैनिकांचे शौर्य व समर्पण यांच्या स्फूर्तिदायक कथा ऐकल्या. अनेक विचारवंतांच्या व भूमिगत कार्यकर्त्यांच्या मुलाखती घेतल्या. या सर्वांतून जीवनातील उदात्तता व भव्यता, क्रूरता व निर्घृणता, मृत्यूची कृष्णछाया आणि नवजीवनाचा प्रकाश यांचे अपूर्व दर्शन मला घडले! त्याच काळात बांगला देशातील विचारवंतांच्या जगात प्रवेश मिळाला, आणि त्यांच्याबरोबर केलेल्या चर्चेतून माझ्या मनातील अनेक प्रश्नांना उत्तरे मिळाली.
