1907 ते 93 असे 85 वर्षांचे आयुष्य लाभलेले नारायण गणेश उर्फ नानासाहेब गोरे यांची प्रमुख ओळख समाजवादी नेते अशी आहे. भारताच्या स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यात 1942 च्या चळवळीत भाग घेऊन त्यांनी तुरुंगवासही भोगला होता. नंतर त्यांनी पुणे शहराचे महापौर, पुणे मतदार संघातून लोकसभा सदस्य आणि ब्रिटनमध्ये भारताचे उच्चायुक्त म्हणूनही काम केले. आयुष्याच्या अखेरच्या टप्प्यात ते साधना साप्ताहिकाचे संपादकही होते. मात्र या व्यतिरिक्त त्यांची एक महत्त्वाची ओळख म्हणजे, मराठीतील अतिशय शैलीदार लेखक! कथा व ललित साहित्य त्यांनी विपुल प्रमाणात लिहिले आणि महत्वाच्या पुस्तकांचे अनुवादही केले. दोन डझन पुस्तके त्यांच्या नावावर आहेत. अशा या नानासाहेबांचे स्वतःच्या आयुष्याचे विहंगमावलोकन करणारे चिंतन म्हणजे "तिमिरातून तेजाकडे" हा दीर्घ लेख..!

Narayan Ganesh alias Nanasaheb Goray, who lived for 85 years from 1907 to 93, was a well known socialist leader. He participated in 1942 Quit India movement, as a result was in Jail for couple of years. After independence, he served as a Mayor of Pune, Member of Lok Sabha from Pune Constituency and High Commissioner of India to Britain. In the last phase of his life, he remained the editor of Sadhana Weekly for couple of years. Apart from this, he was a prolific writer in Marathi! He wrote mainly nonfiction, but few short stories also. He also translated few very important books, such as An Autobiography of Jawaharlal Nehru. More than two dozen books are on his name. This autobiographical essay renders thoughts and actions of his diverse life.
