संपूर्ण दीड दशकावर ओझरती नजर टाकली तरी हे उघडपणे दिसते की, बालकुमार अंक क्रमाक्रमाने मोठा होत गेला आहे, युवावस्थेकडे झुकत गेला आहे, अकाली प्रौढत्वाच्या दिशेने सरकला आहे. विशेषतः मागील सहा वर्षांतील दिवाळी अंकांकडे पाहिले तर ! कारण मागील दोन वर्षे मुले मुली केंद्रस्थानी असलेले जगभरातील वेगवेगळ्या भाषांतील सिनेमे ही थीम घेऊन अंक काढले गेले. त्या आधीची दोन वर्षे भारतातील विविध राज्यांतील बालकुमार वयोगटातील कर्तबगार मुले-मुली ही थीम घेऊन अंक काढले. आणि त्यापूर्वीची दोन वर्षे जगभरातील विविध देशांतील बालकुमार वयोगटातील कर्तबगार मुले- मुली अशी थीम होती.

या पार्श्वभूमीवर, पूर्वीच्या इतकाच किंबहुना अधिक पुढची यत्ता गाठणारा अंक या वर्षी काढावासा वाटणे साहजिक होते. त्या प्रक्रियेतून "म्हणजे काय?" या थीमकडे आम्ही वळलो. आणि मग भाषा म्हणजे काय, गणित म्हणजे काय, विज्ञान म्हणजे काय, अर्थशास्त्र म्हणजे काय, राज्यशास्त्र म्हणजे काय, इतिहास म्हणजे काय, या सहा विषयांचे अंतरंग उलगडून दाखवणारे सहा लेख या अंकासाठी ठरवले. त्या त्या विषयांच्या मूलभूत संकल्पना स्पष्ट करणारे आणि त्या त्या विषयांचे समाजजीवनाशी असलेले नाते उलगडून दाखवणारे लेख, त्या त्या क्षेत्रातील तज्ज्ञ व्यक्तींकडून लिहून घेतले आहेत. या सर्वांनी किमान चार दशके आपापल्या विषयात अध्यापन व संशोधन तर केलेले आहेच, शिवाय आपापला विषय समाजजीवनातील विविध क्षेत्रांत रुजविण्यासाठी या ना त्या प्रकारे योगदान दिलेले आहे.

A cursory glance over the entire decade and a half reveals that Balkumar Ank has grown progressively older, leaning towards adolescence, moving towards premature adulthood. Especially if we look at the Diwali numbers of the last six years! Because for the last two years, the issues were drawn with the theme of movies in different languages from around the world with boys and girls at the center. For the previous two years, the issue was drawn with the theme of the boys and girls of the age group of children from various states of India. And the previous two years, the theme was the talented boys and girls of the age group of children from different countries around the world.

Against this backdrop, it was only natural that this year's issue would reach the same level as the previous one, if not more. From that process "so what?" We turn to this theme. And then, six articles were decided for this issue, which will reveal the intricacies of these six subjects: what is language, what is mathematics, what is science, what is economics, what is political science, what is history. Articles explaining the basic concepts of those subjects and revealing the relationship of those subjects with social life, are written by experts in that field. All of them have not only done teaching and research in their respective subjects for at least four decades, but have also contributed in one way or the other to root their subjects in various areas of social life.
